David Davis: A Man of serious courage!

David Davis has just resigned as an MP over the horrific erosion of our liberties that has gone on since this nasty Labour government got into power.

His aim is to force a by election in Haltemprice and Howden and return to the House of Commons with an increased mandate to fight against the 42 day detention without charge bill.

I must admit this came as a complete shock to me and many others in the Conservative party. David Davis is a man of serious courage.

Nick Clegg, leader of the Liberal Democrats has said that they will not be fielding a candidate. Well done him.

The BBC has this, Iain Dale has this, PoliticalBetting has this.

excellent news .... hopefully a good kicking for Gordon Brown and the fascist nutjobs that want to bring in laws to criminalise just about everything.

I'm afraid I am going to make myself unpopular and disagree with Davis and the complaints over the 42 day bill.

Is Davis using this as a publicity stunt rather than a serious personal moral dilemma? I am rather sceptical.

I've written a post about it anyway.

I have not, and I never shall vote forthe Tory Party. However, I wish to say that David Davis is a man of principle. It is more than refreshing to witness a politician truly stand up for an issue they believe in, he is a courageous man, and I wish him all the very best for there are many issues that are far more important then Party politics. Integrity is the word that best describes the man!

Davis is right to object so strongly to loss of civil liberties, but what he has just done has to be one of the most ill considered and pointless acts of ego-powered political suicide in recent history. As shadow home secretary he had a platform to take this to the country; as a by election of one, he has an audience of a few thousand. Labour would be insane to field a candidate, and the Lib Dems have said they won't contest. So where's the debate? All he's achieved is to take the heat off Brown.

"Courage" is great, but only when underwritten by wisdom.
